CHARLOTTESVILLE – University of Virginia women’s head rowing coach Kevin Sauer is the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) South Region Coach of the Year for 2007 and Virginia assistant Steve Pritzker is the CRCA’s South Region Assistant Coach of the Year.
In addition, five members of the Virginia team have been recognized as Scholar-Athletes by the CRCA and five Cavaliers have earned All-South Region honors.
Earning Scholar-Athlete honors are Mary Eddy (Arlington, Va.), Michelle Ellison (Cincinnati, Ohio), Diane Leigh (Maitland, Fla.), Caitlin Mixter (Oakton, Va.) and Chrissie Monaghan (Flanders, N.J.). Individuals earning CRCA Scholar-Athlete recognition must have at least a 3.50 grade point average, be in at least their second year of eligibility and have rowed in at least 75 percent of their team’s 2007 spring races.
Four Cavaliers earned first-team All-South Region honors and one received second-team All-South Region recognition. Earning first-team honors are Melanie Kok (St. Catharines, Ontario), Kerry Maher (Welland, Ontario), Libby McCann (Arlington, Mass.) and coxswain Caitlin Mixter (Oakton, Va.), while Sara Lippa (Bala Cynwyd, Pa.) earned second-team honors. All five are members of Virginia’s varsity eight crew.
The Virginia rowing team begins competition at the NCAA Championships on Friday (May 25) at Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn. The Cavaliers won their eighth consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference Championship in April. Earlier this month, Virginia won the overall championship and the South Region Championship at the Aramark South/Central Regional Championships.
