CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia starting pitcher Jacob Thompson (Danville, Va.) has been honored as a Louisville Slugger First-Team All-American, while teammate Sean Doolittle (Tabernacle, N.J.) has garnered third-team distinction. The team was selected by the staff of Collegiate Baseball newspaper.
Thompson is Virginia’s fourth first-team All-American, joining Brian Buchanan (1994), Seth Greisinger (1996) and Joe Koshansky (2004). Thompson has gone 11-0 this year with a 1.35 ERA in 15 starts. In 106 2/3 innings, he has allowed just 72 hits and 26 walks while striking out 92. He also owns two shutouts and tied the Virginia career wins record by earning his 21st career victory in the Cavaliers’ 6-1 triumph over N.C. State last week in the ACC tournament. Last week, he was named to the All-ACC First Team.
Doolittle earns his second Louisville Slugger All-America pick at the utility spot after nabbing second-team honors last year. He is hitting .318 this year with a team-high seven home runs and 52 runs batted in. The left-hander also has been tough on the mound with a 7-3 record and 2.57 ERA in 73 2/3 innings. He is tied with Thompson for the career wins record at Virginia with 21 and also took home First-Team All-ACC honors last year for the second-consecutive season.
Florida State second baseman Tony Thomas, Jr., and Vanderbilt pitcher David Price earned National Player of the Year honors.
