The Virginia women’s lacrosse team, 2007 ACC Champions and 2007 NCAA Finalists, were further honored on Wednesday as three student-athletes were named All-Americans by the IWLCA and US Lacrosse. Kate Breslin and Blair Weymouth were both named to the first team while Jess Wasilewski was named to the second team. This is the second All-American honor for Weymouth while it is the first such honor for Breslin and Wasilewski.
Breslin, a 2007 semifinalist for the Tewaaraton Trophy, led the Cavaliers with 68 goals and 28 assists on the season. She now holds the record for goals as a fourth-year and her 96 points ranks fifth all-time for a single season in Virginia history while her 28 assists ranks ninth all-time in school history. She also ranks ninth all-time in school history with 183 points. Breslin ranks 15th nationally in points per game (4.17) and 16th in goals per game (2.96). Her 9 points (6g, 3a) against Princeton ranks fourth all-time in NCAA tournament history for a single game and tied the Virginia record for NCAA championship history (Lauren Aumiller, 8+1 vs Georgetown, 2003). Her 20 points in the NCAA Championship games ( 14g, 6a) ranks sixth all-time for a championship. Her 14 goals ranks fourth all-time in NCAA history for a tournament.
Weymouth ranks second on the team in points (86), goals (58) and assists (28); all three totals place her in the top-two all-time as a second-year. The 2006 ACC and National Rookie of the Year, Weymouth earned second team All-American honors in 2006 and is making her second appearance on the South All-Regional team. She is a member of the USA Developmental Squad.
Wasilewski moved into the top-10 all-time for assists as a fourth year with her 18 in 2007; she has been a mainstay on the Cavalier teams since starting as a first-year in Virginia’s championship season of 2004. A significant part of the UVa midfield; Wasilewski has been a major part of helping the Cavaliers rank in the top-10 nationally in scoring defense (8.42 gapg) and scoring margin (5.10). An All-ACC honoree in 2007, this is her first All-American honor. She was named to the NCAA All-Tournament team after scoring three goals, including the game-winner with nine seconds to play, in the semifinal comeback over Duke, the largest comeback in NCAA Championships history at the Division I level.
