MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Marc Iavaroni, a former Virginia basketball standout, was named head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies of the National Basketball Association (NBA) on May 31. Iavaroni was an assistant coach with the Phoenix Suns for the last five years.

Prior to joining the Suns, Iavaroni served as assistant coach/director of player development for the Miami Heat from 1999-2002 and as an assistant coach with the Cleveland Cavaliers from 1997-99.

Iavaroni played seven years in the NBA (1982-89) with the Philadelphia 76ers, San Antonio Spurs and Utah Jazz. He was a starter as a rookie on the 76ers’ 1983 World Championship team. He also played professionally for five years overseas.

Iavaroni, a 1978 graduate of Virginia, lettered four years for the Cavaliers and was a team captain as a senior. He averaged 11.3 points and 6.5 rebounds a game for his UVa career. Iavaroni scored 1,244 career points for the Cavaliers and still ranks 10th on Virginia’s career rebounding list with 718 rebounds. He was a member of the UVa team that won the 1976 ACC Tournament, and was a first-team All-ACC Tournament selection in 1976 and 1977.
