Oregon State Defeats Rutgers 5-1 in Game Two of Charlottesville Regional

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The reigning national champion Oregon State Beavers opened play in the 2007 NCAA Tournament with a 5-1 victory over Rutgers Friday night in game two of the Charlottesville Regional at Davenport Field.

Joe Paterson pitched six innings for Oregon State, allowing one run on five hits with three strikeouts to pick up the win. He improves to 8-6 on the season. Daniel Turpen pitched the final three innings, allowing no runs on two hits to record his first save of the season. Steve Healing took the loss for Rutgers, allowing five runs (four earned) on ten hits in five innings of work. He falls to 10-4 on the season. Matt Patterson pitched the final four innings for the Scarlet Knights, allowing no runs on one hit.

The Beavers were led offensively by Mike Lissman, Jordan Lennerton, and Scott Santschi, each having two hits. Todd Frazier and Ryan Hill each had two hits to lead Rutgers.

The Scarlet Knights (41-20) took the early lead with a run in the bottom of the first. Frazier led off the inning with a double to the left-center field gap. He scored on Dave Williams’ two-out single through the left side.

Oregon State (39-17) answered with a run in the top of the second inning to tie the game 1-1. Lissman and Lennerton each singled to open the inning and Chris Hopkins followed with a walk to load the bases with no outs. Lissman came in to score later in the inning on a fielding error by Rutgers’ third-baseman Tim Querns.

The Beavers took a 2-1 lead with a run in the top of the third. Joey Wong led off with a single up the middle. He moved to second on Mitch Canham’s single and scored on Lissman’s single.

Oregon State extended its lead to 5-1 with a three-run two-out rally in the top of the fifth. Lennerton singled to left and moved to third on Hopkins’ double down the left field line. Both runners scored as John Wallace doubled to left-center. Santschi sent a ball over the right fielder’s head for the Beavers’ third consecutive double, which drove in Wallace.

The Charlottesville Regional will continue Saturday with a pair of games. The Beavers will meet Virginia at 6 p.m., while the Scarlet Knights will meet the Lafayette at 1 p.m. Virginia defeated Lafayette 5-1 in Friday’s first game.

Single-game reserved tickets are $12, while general admission seats are $8. All seating in the grandstand is reserved. General admission seating is on the left field hillside and in the bleachers beyond the left field fence.
