Virginia Defeats Oregon State 7-4 in 13 Inning Marathon to Win Game Four of the Charlottesville Regional

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia Cavaliers topped reigning national champion Oregon State 7-4 in a 13-inning game Saturday night in the Charlottesville Regional. Virginia remains undefeated in the regional with the victory that took nearly five hours.

Casey Lambert picked the win for Virginia, going 6.2 innings in relief. He allowed one run on five hits while striking out eight to improve his record to 3-2 on the season. Cavalier starter Jacob Thompson worked 6.1 innings, allowing three runs on five hits. Eddie Kunz took the loss for Oregon State, allowing four runs on four hits in 4.2 innings of relief. Beaver starter Mike Stutes went 6.1 innings, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out nine.

David Adams went 3-for-6 and Tim Henry was 2-for-4 to lead Virginia offensively. Darwin Barney went 2-for-5 with 2 RBIs for Oregon State.

The Cavaliers (45-14) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Henry singled and Brandon Marsh was hit by a pitch to open the inning. Sean Doolittle drove in the first run of the game as his single to left scored Henry.

The Beavers (39-18) answered with two runs in the bottom of the first. With one out, John Wallace singled, followed by walks to Mike Lissman and Mitch Canham to load the bases. Barney drew a walk to force in a run and Lissman later scored on Jordan Lennerton’s RBI groundout.

Virginia drew even, 2-2, with a run in the top of the fifth. With one out, back-to-back singles by Brandon Guyer and Adams put runners on the corners. Beau Seabury’s bunt was fielded by Stutes, who threw the ball away attempting a play at the plate to allow Guyer to score.

Oregon State retook the lead, 3-2, in the bottom of the sixth as Barney hit a solo home run to left.

In the top of the seventh, the Cavaliers scored a run to once again tie the game. Seabury drew a one-out walk and advanced to second on a groundout. He scored on Patrick Wingfield’s two-out single up the middle.

The game remained tied at 3-3 and went to extra innings In the top of the 10th, Virginia scored a run without a hit. Wingfield was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame. Tyler Cannon reached on a fielder’s choice that retired Wingfield. He stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. Henry drove in Cannon for the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly to right.

The Beavers answered with a run in the bottom of the inning to extend the game. Chris Hopkins singled to lead off the inning and was on second with two outs. Canham singled to drive in Hopkins and tie the game at 4-4.

In the top of the 13th, the Cavaliers retook the lead, 7-4. Tim Henry opened the inning with a single. He stole second and advanced to third on Mike Mitchell’s sacrifice bunt. After Doolittle was intentionally walked, John Scaglione’s single down the right field line scored Henry to retake the lead. Adams followed with a single up the middle to drive in Doolittle. Seabury’s delivered another single up the middle to score Scaglione.

A Davenport record crowd of 3,212 was in attendance for the game.

The Charlottesville Regional will continue Sunday with a pair of games. Oregon State will meet Rutgers at 1 p.m. in an elimination game. The winner of that game will play Virginia at 6 p.m.

Fans planning on attending Sunday’s games are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance by ordering online at Virginiasports.com. Single-game reserved tickets are $12, while general admission seats are $8. All seating in the grandstand is reserved. General admission seating is on the left field hillside and in the bleachers beyond the left field fence. Fans are also advised to arrive early to avoid congestion in the area parking lots. Gates will open one hour prior to the start of each contest.
