CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia has named Angel Elderkin as an assistant women’s basketball coach, UVa head coach Debbie Ryan announced on Monday.
Elderkin joins the UVa staff after two seasons with the Tennessee Lady Vols, the 2007 National Champions. Last season she worked as the team’s video coordinator, handling all aspects of film and video. She also prepared postgame reports for the staff and players, coordinated recruiting visits, and assisted in marketing of Team Camp. Elderkin worked as a graduate assistant for the Lady Vols during the 2005-06 season.
“I’m really excited about the opportunity to work at Virginia,” Elderkin said. “I’m sad to leave Tennessee, because of all the relationships I was able to build. I’m ready to spread my wings and get back on the court again.”
Before arriving in Knoxville, Elderkin spent four years as an assistant coach at Siena College, where she was an integral part of recruiting some of the best classes in program history at Siena.
Prior to her stint at Siena, Elderkin spent two seasons at East Tennessee State, where she served as a special assistant to the head coach.
Ironically, Elderkin began her basketball career at Virginia as the assistant camp coordinator during the summer of 2000.
“The one opportunity to work camp opened more opportunities for me,” Elderkin added. “I am happy to be able to give back to Virginia.”
Elderkin was a four-year letterwinner at guard for Southern Maine. She led the Huskies to three Little East Conference championships and an astounding 104-15 overall record. She helped lead her team to the Division III NCAA Tournament during each of her four years. In 1998, the Huskies were the national runner-up. Elderkin also played on the softball team from 1996-98.
A two-time recipient of the William B. Wise Scholar-Athlete Award, Elderkin was named to the All-Little East Honor Roll in 1997. In September 2004, her 1997-98 Husky basketball team was inducted into the New England Hall of Fame.
Elderkin earned her bachelor’s degree in sociology from Southern Maine in 1999 with a minor in education. She received her master of arts degree in physical education and exercise science from East Tennessee State in 2001.
“I am ecstatic about this hire,” Ryan said. “Angel was a part of my program several years ago, and she has proven to be an excellent coach and up-and-coming star in our business. To quote Pat Summitt, `She’s a jewel.'”
Elderkin replaces Jennifer Hoover who joined the staff at Memphis as associate head coach in May.
