Charlottesville, VA – Former Virginia golfer Leah Wigger has qualified for the 2007 U.S. Women’s Open. Wigger shot 4-over 148 at the Sectional Qualifier at The Village Links of Glen Ellyn in Glen Ellyn, Ill. to be one of 21 players from the event to move on to the national championship. The U.S. Women’s Open will take place June 28-July 1 at Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club in Southern Pines, N.C.
Last year UVa’s Jenni Arseneault made it through a sectional qualifier to The Open. She failed to make the cut after the first 36 holes of play.
The first two rounds of the U.S. Women’s Open will be broadcast by ESPN. NBC Sports will air the final 36 holes of competition.
The United States Women’s Open was added to the USGA’s roster of championships in 1953. Entries are open to professional and amateur female golfers. Amateurs must have an up-to-date USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 4.4 under the USGA Handicap System.
