Leah Wigger Named Third-Team Academic All-American

Charlottesville, VA – Virginia senior golfer Leah Wigger has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America At-Large third team announced today. In addition to women’s golf, the at-large team includes female athletes from bowling, crew, fencing, field hockey, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis and water polo. Wigger graduated from Virginia with a 3.56 grade point average while earning her degree in psychology.

Wigger completed her Cavalier career as the most accomplished golfer in Virginia history. She was an honorable mention All-American in 2005 and earned second-team honors in 2006 and 2007. She was a four-time All-ACC honoree. Wigger was the runner-up at the 2005 NCAA Championships and finished ninth in 2006. She led UVa in stroke average all four seasons. She finished fourth at 2007 ACC Championships and was runner-up in 2006. This week Wigger qualified for the 2007 U.S. Women’s Open.

This year Wigger was UVa’s top performer in eight of 10 tournaments and posted six top-10 finishes. She won Georgia’s Liz Murphey Classic and was the runner-up at the Fall Preview.

A native of Louisville, Ky., Wigger has been named to the Academic All-ACC team the past three seasons. She was named UVa’s female student-athlete of the year for 2007. Last year she was a second team selection to the 2006 District III ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American squad.

To be eligible for the Academic All-American award, candidates must have a 3.2 GPA or better and be a significant contributor to their team on the field.
