Virginia Beach – Virginia’s Kaitlyn Hiltz (South) and Alex Kyser and Christina Kirkaldy (Midwest) battled to a 0-0 draw in the opening match of the 2007 High Performance National Championships held today at the US Field Hockey Training Center in Virginia Beach. In the second contest, the Virginia/Maryland side fell behind to California 3-0, but rallied to pull within one at 4-3 before ultimately falling by that same score. Virginia’s Mia Link and Traci Ragukas both scored for Virginia/Maryland.
Kyser was a part of a defense on Midwest that allowed only one short corner in the game, and the side did not allow a goal.
Ragukas scored the first goal of the game for Virginia/Maryland, connecting on a scrum in the first half that stopped the opening run for the opponents. A late goal for California made it 4-1 at the break.
In the second half, Link pulled the Virginia/Maryland side closer with a great effort from the top of the 25, pulling to the right and scoring on a chip shot to pull her team within two. A goal off a short corner minutes later pulled the Virginia/Maryland team to within one and her team took three more corners but could not pull the equalizer.
Virginia/Maryland take on Midwest tomorrow (June 18) at 7:30 am while Hiltz and the rest of the South team play Pennsylvania/New Jersey at 3 pm.
