Thompson Adds ABCA All-America Honors to Postseason Awards

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia sophomore starting pitcher Jacob Thompson (Danville, Va.) has earned First-Team All-America honors from the American Baseball Coaches Association. By a vote of the region’s coaches, Thompson also was a First-Team All-Atlantic Region selection, and he then was named to the All-America team by a panel of national coaches.

Thompson was joined on the First-Team All-Atlantic Region team by teammate Greg Miclat (Concord, N.C.), who earned the award at designated hitter. Brandon Guyer (Herndon, Va.) was named to the All-Atlantic Region second team.

It marks the fourth All-America honor that Thompson has earned this year. He also has gleaned Baseball America, Louisville Slugger and rivals.com First-Team All-America honors.

Thompson recorded one of the finest seasons ever for a Virginia pitcher, going 11-0 with a 1.50 ERA. In 114 innings, he surrendered just 79 hits and 23 runs (19 earned). He walked 32 and struck out 101. He also recorded two shutouts while allowing just 13 extra-base hits all season.

This summer, Thompson will compete with the USA Baseball National Team, which will participate in the Pan Am Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and the World Port Tournament in The Netherlands. Thompson also is one of three finalists for the Roger Clemens Award, which will be presented July 11 at a ceremony in Houston.

Miclat led the Cavaliers in hitting this season with a .376 batting average, which ranked fifth in the ACC. He stole a school-record 32 bases in 37 attempts and scored 51 runs in 44 games before his season ended prematurely because of an injury. He also added 11 doubles, a team-high four triples and 39 walks.

Guyer hit .370 this season and tied for the team lead in hits (84) with David Adams and runs (51) with Miclat. He led the team in home runs (8), doubles (19), total bases (127) and at bats (227). He also stole 18 bases in 19 attempts. Guyer, a fifth-round selection of the Chicago Cubs this season in the Major League Baseball Draft, had a 26-game hitting streak during the year, marking the 10th-longest hitting streak in the country in 2007.
