CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Five Virginia baseball players have earned 2007 University Division All-State honors, as selected by the Virginia College Sports Information Directors (VaSID). Virginia head coach Brian O’Connor was picked for Coach of the Year laurels for the fourth-consecutive year, while sophomore right-hander Jacob Thompson (Danville, Va.) nabbed the Pitcher of the Year award.

Thompson was joined on the first team by fellow pitcher Sean Doolittle (Tabernacle, N.J.), outfielder Brandon Guyer (Herndon, Va.) and designated hitter Greg Miclat (Concord, N.C.). Doolittle also earned second-team honors at first base, and David Adams (Margate, Fla.) gleaned second-team distinction at second base.

Thompson was a consensus 2007 First-Team All-American after recording one of the finest seasons ever for a Virginia pitcher, going 11-0 with a 1.50 ERA. In 114 innings, he surrendered just 79 hits and 23 runs (19 earned). He walked 32 and struck out 101 as opponents hit just .198 against him. He also recorded two shutouts while allowing just 13 extra-base hits all season. He also is one of three finalists for the Roger Clemens Award, which will be presented July 11 at a ceremony in Houston.

Doolittle hit .301 this year with seven home runs and a team-best 53 RBI. He finished the season as the all-time leader in RBI at Virginia with 167 and tied for second in walks (125). On the mound, he went 8-3 this year with a 2.40 ERA and 69 strikeouts in 82 1/3 innings. His 22 career victories ranks No. 1 all-time in the Virginia annals, while his 243 strikeouts ranks fourth. After the season, Doolittle was a supplemental first round Major League Baseball draft pick of the Oakland Athletics.

Miclat led the Cavaliers in hitting this season with a .376 batting average, which ranked fifth in the ACC. He stole a school-record 32 bases in 37 attempts and scored 51 runs in 44 games before his season ended prematurely because of an injury. He also added 11 doubles, a team-high four triples and 39 walks.

Guyer hit .370 this season and tied for the team lead in hits (84) with David Adams and runs (51) with Miclat. He led the team in home runs (8), doubles (19), total bases (127) and at bats (227). He also stole 18 bases in 19 attempts. Guyer, a fifth-round selection of the Chicago Cubs this season in the Major League Baseball Draft, had a 26-game hitting streak during the year, marking the 10th-longest hitting streak in the country in 2007.

Adams finished second on the team with .372 batting average and tied for the team high with 84 hits and four triples. He also swatted five home runs and drove in 43 runs. Adams notched one of the Cavaliers’ key hits of 2007, a walk-off three-run home run in a 7-6 win over Georgia Tech April 14.

Virginia finished the season 45-16 after falling to eventual national champion Oregon State in the NCAA Charlottesville Regional. The Cavaliers went 19-9 in the ACC and posted a 12-2 record against in-state opponents.
