SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The 2006 Virginia field hockey media guide was honored on Tuesday (July 3) by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) as the fourth-best guide in the nation in the single-sport category. The guide was produced by Chip Rogers and Matt Riley and ranked second in the nation among field hockey guides. The Cavaliers had the highest-ranked media guide among teams ranked in the national polls and that made the NCAA Championships field.
“My decision to come to UVa had a lot to do with the overwhelming excellence observed in all aspects of the athletic department, including the media relations division,” said head coach Michele Madison. “The pursuit of excellence in all aspects of this university is by design and so modern and refreshing. It’s no surprise that this program is nationally recognized beyond the playing field; it is another pat on the back for the shared mission of President Casteen and Craig Littlepage. Chip Rogers is highly respected in the field hockey community at all levels. I hear constantly, ‘You are so lucky to have Chip.’ We know and we congratulate Chip, Matt Riley, Jim Daves and the entire media relations staff for their recognition.”
Under the direction of National Coach of the Year Madison and Associate Head Coach Chris Spice, the Cavaliers advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals for the first time since 2001. Virginia forged a 14-8 record against the nation’s fifth-toughest schedule, including three wins over conference champions and four teams that made the NCAA field in 2006.
The 2007 Cavaliers, led by first-team All-American Inge Kaars Sijpesteijn and National All-Rookie Squad member Traci Ragukas, will begin their campaign with a scrimmage against 2006 NCAA participant American on August 18 before hosting NCAA participant Penn State in the opener on August 26.
