Charlottesville, VA – Virginia women’s golfer Leah Wigger was named to the 2007 National Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar Team. Wigger was one of 368 golfers from the Division I, II and III ranks to earn the distinction. It marked the fourth straight year Wigger received the honor.
The criteria for selection to the All-American Scholar Team are some of the most stringent of all college athletics. The minimum cumulative GPA is 3.50 and student-athletes must have competed in at least 50 percent (Division I) or 66 percent (Division II & III) of the college’s regularly scheduled competitive rounds during the year.
A native of Louisville, Ky., Wigger recently completed her Cavalier career as the most accomplished golfer in Virginia history. She was an honorable mention All-American in 2005 and earned second-team honors in 2006 and 2007. She was a four-time All-ACC honoree. She was the runner-up at the 2005 NCAA Championships and finished ninth in 2006. She has led UVa in stroke average all four seasons. She finished fourth at 2007 ACC Championships and was runner-up in 2006.
Earlier this year she was a named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America At-Large third team. Wigger has been named to the Academic All-ACC team the past four seasons. She was named UVa’s female student-athlete of the year for 2007.
Lene Krog, who is transferring into the UVa program from East Carolina, was also named to the NGCA All-American Scholar Team.
The National Golf Coaches Association, founded in 1983, is a non-profit organization representing women’s collegiate golf coaches. The NGCA was formed to encourage the playing of college golf for women in correlation with a general objective of education and in accordance with the highest tradition of intercollegiate competition. Today, the NGCA represents over 400 coaches throughout the U.S. and is dedicated to educating, promoting and recognizing both its members and the student-athletes they represent.
