CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia men’s soccer team announced its 2007 schedule, which includes 12 home games at Klöckner Stadium. This season, the Cavaliers play seven teams that participated in last season’s NCAA Tournament. Four of those opponents reached at least the round of 16.
“First, I would like to thank the community, as well as the student body, for helping us set the all-time attendance record for college soccer,” head coach George Gelnovatch said. “Their support helped carry us to the College Cup last season, and it is our goal to return and win it all this year. We feel very good about our schedule this year, which includes out of conference opponents St. John’s and SMU. Duke, UNC, VT, and Boston College will be coming to Klöckner in the fall, and we are hoping to set new attendance records. I can promise some real excitement for the fans this year. Thanks again to all of our supporters.”
In the non-conference, the Cavaliers will host in-state rivals Richmond (Sept. 2) and Liberty (Oct. 23) as well as Columbia (Aug. 31), St. John’s (Sept. 16), Campbell (Sept. 19), Mount St. Mary’s (Sept. 25), Florida Atlantic (Oct. 16), and Mercer (Oct. 30) at Klöckner Stadium. Virginia will travel to Dallas to compete in the Mi Cocina Classic, facing host Southern Methodist (Sept. 7) and Tulsa (Sept. 9).
In ACC play, NCAA Tournament participants Virginia Tech (Sept. 28), North Carolina (Oct. 6), and Duke (Oct. 26), along with and Boston College (Oct. 19), will visit Charlottesville. The Cavaliers will visit four ACC teams- NC State (Sept. 22), Clemson (Oct. 12), Maryland (Nov. 3), and Wake Forest (Nov. 10), which also advanced to the 2006 College Cup along with the Cavaliers.
In the preseason, the Cavaliers will play a pair of exhibition contests. Virginia travels to Virginia Commonwealth on Sunday, Aug. 19, before returning home to host South Florida at Klöckner Stadium on Saturday, Aug. 25.
Last season, the Cavaliers finished with a 17-4-1 overall record and reached the NCAA College Cup. Fifteen players, including six starters, return from that squad and are joined by one of the nation’s top recruiting classes.
