Rowing Alumnae Compete at Pan Am Games

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil – Two Virginia rowing alumnae- Jennifer Reck (`04) and Margaret Matia (`05)- are competing this week for the United States at the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Reck will compete in the women’s pair with teammate Ruth Stiver. After finishing fourth (7:38.14) in the race for lanes on Saturday, the duo will compete in the final race in that event on Tuesday, July 17 at 9 a.m.

In the women’s double sculls race for lanes, Matia and teammate Sarah Trowbridge captured first place in 7:16.03. The duo advances to the final on Wednesday, July 18 at 9 a.m.

Matia, Trowbridge, and teammates Reilly Dampeer and Julie Nichols placed first in 6:57.11 in the women’s quadruple sculls race for lane assignments. The U.S. crew advances to gold medal finals on Thursday, July 18 at 9:45 a.m.

Reck is Virginia’s only three-time first-team All-American. In addition, she earned CRCA National Scholar-Athlete accolades three times. Reck was a member of the varsity eight that earned ACC Crew of the Year accolades in 2002, 2003, and 2004. The two-time team captain also competed for the U.S. at the 2001 U23 World Championships, stroking the U.S. four to a silver medal.

Matia earned first-team All-America honors in 2005. Also a team captain as a senior, the All-ACC honoree was a member of the 2004 varsity eight that earned ACC Crew of the Year accolades. Matia also rowed at the 2006 National Selection Regattas.
