Reck Wins Bronze Medal at Pan Am Games

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil – Former Virginia rower Jennifer Reck (`04) captured a bronze medal in the women’s pair with teammate Ruth Stiver on Tuesday morning at the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Chile’s Soraya Jadue and Maria Jose Orellana captured gold in 7:28.94. Canada’s Zoe Hoskins and Nathalie Maurer won silver in 7:30.05, while the U.S. pair of Reck and Stiver won bronze in 7:36.12. Cuba’s Yurisleydis Venet and Magela Despaigne finished fourth in 7:40.09.

Reck is Virginia’s only three-time first-team All-American. In addition, she earned CRCA National Scholar-Athlete accolades three times. Reck was a member of the varsity eight that earned ACC Crew of the Year accolades in 2002, 2003, and 2004. The two-time team captain also competed for the U.S. at the 2001 U23 World Championships, stroking the U.S. four to a silver medal.

Virginia alumna Margaret Matia (`05) and teammate Sarah Trowbridge will compete in the final of the women’s double sculls on Wednesday, July 18 at 9 a.m.

In the women’s quadruples sculls, Matia, Trowbridge, and teammates Reilly Dampeer and Julie Nichols advance to the gold medal finals on Thursday, July 18 at 9:45 a.m.
