CHARLOTTESVILLE – Members of the Virginia men’s tennis team have been spending the summer playing in tournaments around the country. The Cavaliers have had success in benefit tournaments, open tournaments, and events on the ITA Summer Circuit.
DEVVARMAN REACHES FINAL OF CHARITY TOURNAMENT
In his first tournament since winning the NCAA Singles Championship in May, Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) reached the finals of the Kennedy Funding Invitational in New City, N.Y. He defeated three ATP top 200 players en route to the final of the benefit tournament.
In the round of 16, Devvarman topped former top-50 player Ricardo Mello, currently ranked No. 154 in the world, 7-6, 6-4. The following day, he defeated the first top 100 player of his career, downing No. 99 Robert Kendrick 6-3, 4-6, 7-6. In the match, Devvarman was down 4-0 in the third set, before rallying for the victory. In the semifinals, he scored a 6-3, 6-2 win over Justin Gimelstob, who has made it to the third round of a grand slam five times in his career. In the final, Devvarman fell to Michael Russell, ranked No. 69 in the world, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.
The tournament, held at the Dellwood Country Club, features top professional and collegiate players and raises money for several local hospitals. Devvarman reached the main draw out of the qualifying draw. Fellow Cavalier Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.) was also in the qualifying draw at the event, defeating No. 860 ranked Jhonson Garcia 6-2, 6-2 before falling in three sets to No. 505 ranked Victor Estrella, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.
BARRICK AND INGLOT SHINE IN ROANOKE
Houston Barrick (Brentwood, Tenn.) won the men’s open singles title at the Roanoke Valley Invitational last month, defeating top-seeded Arvid Puranen of Virginia Tech in the semifinals and teammate Dominic Inglot (London, England) in the final. Earlier in the tournament, Inglot defeated Virginia Tech’s Pedro Graber and Albert Larregola. In the doubles draw, Barrick and Inglot took the title, topping the Hokie team of Graber and Nicolas Delgado in the final. That Hokie team finished 2007 ranked No. 20 in the ITA rankings and reached the second round of the NCAA Doubles Championship.
SINGER WINS ON ITA SUMMER CIRCUIT, SUNDERLAND REACHES FINAL
Lee Singer (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) won the singles title at Intercollegiate Summer Circuit event in Newport Beach, Calif. earlier this month. Singer won all five of his matches in straight sets, and defeated fellow Cavalier Leif Sunderland (Malibu, Calif.) in the final, 6-2, 7-5.
ANGELINOS REACHES SEMIFINALS IN MID-ATLANTIC CLAY COURTS
Ted Angelinos (Athens, Greece) reached the semifinals of the USTA/Mid-Atlantic Open Clay Court Championships last week in Midlothian, Va. Angelinos made the semifinals with three straight set wins. He lost in the semifinals to Oren Motevassel, a former world top-200, who was the tournament’s No. 1 seed and eventual champion.
BARRICK HONORED BY USTA
Houston Barrick was honored last week by the United States Tennis Association as one of the four annual recipients of the Bill Talbert Junior Sportsmanship Award. The recipients were honored in Newport, R.I. as part of the International Tennis Hall of Fame enshrinement ceremonies.
