CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia pitcher Jacob Thompson (Danville, Va.) earned a silver medal at the Pan American Games Friday with the U.S. National Team, as the Americans dropped a 3-1 decision to Cuba in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Thompson earned the gold-medal game start and went four innings, giving up three earned runs, seven hits and a walk while striking out one. The earned runs were the first Thompson has surrendered this summer as a member of the national team. In 21 1/3 innings, Thompson has a 1-2 record with a 1.27 ERA, and opponents are hitting just .173 against him.
The U.S. National Team returns to the United States Friday night and is back in action at 6 p.m. Sunday against China at Hank Aaron Stadium in Mobile, Ala. The team will play five games against China, then take on the Netherlands for three games and Russia for one before traveling to the 2007 World Port Tournament in the Netherlands Aug. 2-12.
