Charlottesville, Va. – Cavalier tight end Tom Santi is one of 31 players named to the John Mackey Award watch list announced by the Nassau County Sports Commission. The Mackey Award is presented annually to the best tight end in the country.

Santi, a native of Nashville, Tenn., ranked fourth among ACC tight ends with 29 receptions for 253 yards and one touchdown. He has caught 61 passes for 766 yards and three touchdowns in his career to rank eighth in UVa history in receiving by a tight end.

The senior sociology major also excels in the classroom and was named to last season’s All-ACC Academic Football team.

The Mackey Award is named for John Mackey, one of the greatest tight ends to ever play the game. A tight end by which all others are measured, he was a role model on and off the field as demonstrated by his Super Bowl championship with the Baltimore Colts in 1971, his commitment to community and his place in history as the first president of the NFL Players Association.

Former Virginia standout Heath Miller won the Mackey Award as a junior in 2004 and was a first-round selection of the Pittsburgh Steelers the following spring.
