Pinehurst, NC – Incoming Virginia freshman golfer Calle Nielson had an outstanding week of play at the recent North & South Amateur Championships at Pinehurst. The Nashville, Tenn., native reached the quarterfinals of match play before losing to eventual champion Alison Walshe 6 and 5.

Nielson was one of three Cavalier players to advance to the match play portion of the championship that was held for the 105th consecutive year. Nielson was 56th in the early stroke play competition, finishing at 11-over 155 with rounds of 76 and 79. The group of players with that score were the last to qualify for match play. Kristen Simpson and Carly Truitt also moved on to match play after tying for 41st in stroke ply at 9-over 153. Whitney Neuhauser shot 157 and did not advance.

Both Simpson and Truitt fell in the opening round of match play. Megan Bolger downed Truitt in 19 holes and Katie Trotter eliminated Simpson in 20 holes.

Nielson defeated Kristie Smith 5 and 4 in the opening round, dropped Lucy Nunn 3 and 1 in the second round and advanced to the quarterfinals with a 3 and 2 win over Taylore Karle in the round of 16.
