Charlottesville, VA – Virginia junior golfer Carly Truitt (Marysville, Ohio) has qualified for the 2007 U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship. This year’s event will be held Aug. 6-12 at Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Ind. Truitt advanced after tying for first at the qualifier held at Woodhill Country Club in Wayzata, Minn. She shot 2-over 74.
Sophomore Whitney Neuhauser (Barboursville, Va.) is an alternate for the national event after placing fifth at the qualifier in Sewickley, Pa., at the Allegheny Country Club. She shot 4-over 76 and missed an automatic berth by one stroke.
The U.S. Women’s Amateur, the third oldest of the USGA championships, was first played in 1895 at Meadowbrook Club in Hempstead, N.Y. The event is open to any female amateur who has a USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 5.4. The Women’s Amateur is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the USGA, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs. The tournament starts with two days of stroke-play qualifying rounds with 156 players leading up to four days of match play.
