Charlottesville, VA – Virginia freshman golfer Amory Davis finished second at a sectional qualifying tournament to advance to the 2007 U.S. Amateur Championship. This year’s event will take place Aug. 20-26 at the Olympic Club in San Francisco.
Davis shot 1-over 145 to finish second at the qualifier held at the Meadowlands Country Club in Blue Bell, Pa. He is a native of Chadds Ford, Pa.
The U.S. Amateur, the oldest USGA championship, was first played in 1895 at Newport Golf Club in Rhode Island. The event, which has no age restriction, is open to those with a Handicap Index of 2.4 or lower. It is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the USGA, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs. This will be the third U.S. Amateur Championship hosted by the Olympic Club with previous events being held in 1958 and 1981.
The tournament starts with two days of stroke-play qualifying rounds leading up to four days of match play.
