Freshman Kelly Irvin made a coast-to-coast trip earlier this month, traveling from California to Charlottesville to report as a member of the Virginia volleyball team. Irvin and the rest of the squad are in the second week of preseason camp. The Cavaliers, under the direction of Melissa Aldrich Shelton, open the season Aug. 24 against Texas Tech in the Las Vegas Tournament.
How was your first practice?
The first day of practice was good, just to get to know the team and learn everyone’s personalities. Everyone on the team was really welcoming. At first, I was intimidated by a few of the players. But now it’s been a week and we have all bonded a little. I feel much more comfortable.
What did you expect the preseason to be like?
I expected everyone to come out strong and play like I have seen before. My expectations have been met; everyone is practicing really hard and giving 100 percent. I think everyone is doing really well.
How has the transition been from high school to the collegiate level?
The transition has been fine. I played on a very competitive club team in high school that prepared me really well. Obviously the college game has a different technique than what I am used to. Getting used to the set that Virginia runs is a transition for me, and that is really the biggest hurdle.
How is the transition specifically at the setter position?
It’s been good. The hitters are different than what I am used to but it has been good getting to know everyone, what each hitter likes. It has been difficult at times but I am coming along.
The team opens in Vegas next week. What will it feel like to get on the court for the first time?
I am really excited for it. I’m pumped. I think our team is going to do really well, as long as we keep practicing hard.
