CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Lauren Dickson had a solid rookie campaign a year ago for the Virginia volleyball team, earning a spot on the All-Atlantic Coast Conference freshmen team. A year later, Dickson reported for preseason workouts knowing what to expect and is happy to pass on any advice to the five newcomers.

How is the preseason going so far?

I think it is going really well. I am excited about our new team. The first-years are doing a really good job of coming right in and stepping up. The first week was pretty hot but it was a good challenge for us to come in and work through that. I think we have already improved a lot. We are looking forward to starting the season in Vegas.

How does your second preseason compare to last summer?

It’s a little easier just because I knew what to expect. But you still have to be mentally ready. It’s not too different but a little easier.

Have you been able to help guide the first-years since you were in their shoes last year?

A little. If anything, just helping the nerves. I know that it’s hard to come in when you don’t know what to expect. They have done a great job. The things we can do as older players is tell them they are doing fine, keep answering their questions and tell them what to expect from the coaches.

Is the team meshing well so far?

I think we have people that can play very position. We have a lot of options as far as lineups go. Off the court, everyone is getting along really well. We have a similar team to last year plus the new people are fitting in really well. They bring a lot of energy.

You open the season next week in Las Vegas. Are you excited?

It will be fun to start the season out there. We are lucky that we get to go to a place like that. Obviously we aren’t going to get to do too much when we’re there. But it will be fun.
