DURHAM, N.C. The fourth ranked Virginia women’s soccer team opened ACC play Thursday night with a 2-0 victory at Duke. Kelly Quinn (Dublin, Ohio) and Julia Falk (Clifton, Va.) scored less than two minutes apart in the second half to give the Cavaliers their fifth consecutive victory.

“We are pleased with the result,” said head coach Steve Swanson. “Anytime you can get a win on the road in the ACC, it is a positive. However, I thought we weren’t as sharp as we normally are and our work ethic wasn’t where it normally is. We need to improve on that as we continue in conference play.”

The Cavaliers (7-1-1, 1-0-0 ACC) and Blue Devils (5-2-2, 0-1-0 ACC) played a scoreless first half with neither team creating a dangerous scoring chance. Virginia outshot Duke 5-3 before the break.

In the second half, Virginia took the lead in the 64th minute of play. Sarah Senty (Arlington, Va.) sent a ball into the open space on the left flank. Quinn beat the Duke goalkeeper to the ball and chipped the ball over her into the vacated net to record her fourth goal of the year. Less than 80 seconds later, the Cavaliers doubled their lead. Jen Redmond (Morristown, N.J.) sent a through ball to spring Quinn, who sent a cross to Julia Falk (Clifton, Va.), who one-timed it into the net for her third goal of the season.

The Cavaliers posted their sixth consecutive shutout and extended their shutout streak to over 656 minutes, now the longest in school history. The previous record of 654 minutes was set in 1990.

Virginia outshot Duke 11-10 in the game, while the Blue Devils had a 5-2 corner kick advantage. Chantel Jones (Midlothian, Va.) made four saves to post her sixth shutout of the season. Allison Lipsher made two saves for Duke.

The Cavaliers will continue their ACC opening road trip on Sunday as they visit No. 23 Wake Forest. Game time at Spry Stadium in Winston-Salem is 1 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live online by ACC Select.
