WESLEY CHAPEL, Fla. Two members of the Virginia men’s tennis team won the doubles title at the first USTA Futures Circuit event of the season. Seniors Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) and Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.) took the title, winning the event for the second consecutive year.
In the final, Devvarman and Huey defeated the No. 2 seeded team of Ladislav Chramosta and Daniel Lustig, 6-2, 6-2. The Cavalier duo is currently ranked No. 1 in the ITA doubles rankings and was 13-0 during competition in the fall.
In the singles draw, Devvarman advanced to the semifinals, defeating former Wake Forest standout Todd Paul, 7-6 (5), 6-1 in the quarterfinals. The two met four times in their collegiate careers, with Devvarman winning all four matchups. Devvarman will meet Greg Ouellette, a senior at Florida, in the semifinals on Saturday. Devvarman is currently ranked No. 1 in the ITA singles rankings, while Ouellette is ranked No. 8.
The tournament continues through Sunday at the Saddlebrook Resort.
