CHARLOTTESVILLEThe Virginia men’s basketball team opens the home portion of its Atlantic Coast Conference schedule on Wednesday (Jan. 16) when the Cavaliers host Virginia Tech at John Paul Jones Arena. The game, which is sold out, is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. and will be televised by ESPNU.
The game will also be on V Pass Live Audio at virginiasports.com.
Virginia is looking to break a two-game losing streak after losses at Xavier and Duke. The Cavaliers are now 10-4 overall and 0-1 in the ACC.
Sophomore guard Calvin Baker, who transferred to Virginia from William and Mary, made his first start for the Cavaliers at Duke on Sunday (Jan. 13). He had 13 points, four rebounds, two assists and one steal in 29 minutes of action in the game. Baker has played in every game this season and is averaging 9.5 points, 2.6 assists and 23.4 minutes played a game.
Senior guard Sean Singletary continues to lead UVa in scoring and assists. He is averaging 17.9 points and 6.6 assists a game. Singletary scored a team-high 18 points in the Cavaliers’ loss at Duke.
Senior forward Adrian Joseph is Virginia’s leading rebounder with an average of 7.8 a game. Joseph is averaging 11.9 points a game and junior forward/guard Mamadi Diane is averaging 11.4 points a game.
Virginia Tech enters Wednesday’s game with an overall record of 10-6 and a 1-1 record in the ACC. The Hokies have won their last two games and are coming off a 67-66 victory over Maryland last Saturday (Jan. 12) in Blacksburg, Va.
Virginia Tech is led in scoring by junior guard/forward A.D. Vassallo who is averaging 15.8 points a game. Freshman forward Jeff Allen is averaging 12.9 points a game and is the Hokies’ leading rebounder with an average of 8.2 rebounds a game. Senior forward Deron Washington is averaging 12.4 points and 6.3 rebounds a game.
Seth Greenberg is in his fifth season as the head coach at Virginia Tech and his 18th season as a collegiate head coach. His Virginia Tech teams have compiled an overall record of 77-62 and the Hokies participated in the NCAA Tournament last season.
Virginia leads the overall series with Virginia Tech 78-47 and the Cavaliers are 31-9 in games played in Charlottesville between the two teams. The teams split two games last season with Virginia Tech winning 84-57 in Blacksburg and the Cavaliers registering a 69-56 victory at John Paul Jones Arena. This is the 74th consecutive season the Cavaliers and Hokies have met.
