CHARLOTTESVILLE The Virginia men’s tennis team closed out the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 7-0 win over No. 9 Baylor Saturday afternoon at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. The Cavaliers improve to 15-0 on the season with the win, while Baylor falls to 9-4 on the season.

“Overall this was strong weekend for us,” said Virginia associate head coach Tony Bresky. “Texas and Baylor are two of the best teams in the country, so to win two matches like we did this weekend gives us a lot of confidence.”

Virginia took a 1-0 lead in the match by sweeping the doubles matches. Dominic Inglot (London, England) and Houston Barrick (Brentwood, Tenn.) topped Dominik Mueller and Atilla Bucko 8-5 at No. 2 doubles. Sanam Singh (Chandigarh, India) and Michael Shabaz (Fairfax, Va.) sealed the opening point for Virginia with their 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles over Denes Lukacs and Gwen Corches. At No. 1 doubles, Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) and Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.) completed the sweep with an 8-4 win over David Galic and Jordan Rux.

“It was big for us to win the doubles point,” said Bresky. “Our singles lineup is so strong that it is going to be tough for anyone to take four singles matches from us, so to win the doubles point is big. There are still some things we need to improve on, but today the doubles gave us a lot of momentum.”

In singles, the Cavaliers got off to a strong start, winning the first set in all six matches. In five of the matches, Virginia won in straight sets. Shabaz cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 win over Corches at No. 4 singles to make the score 2-0. Barrick defeated Bucko 7-5, 6-2 at No. 6 singles to increase the Virginia lead to 3-0. At No. 2 singles, Huey clinched the dual match for Virginia with his 6-4, 6-4 win over Galic. Singh remained undefeated in dual match play this season, topping Mueller 6-3, 7-6 at No. 3 singles for his 14th consecutive victory. Angelinos also remained unbeaten in dual match singles play this season, recording his 12th consecutive win with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Rux at No. 5 singles.

In the only match to go three sets, Devvarman rallied from down an early break in the third set to top Lukacs 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 at No. 1 singles. It was his 17th consecutive singles win this season and his 22nd consecutive dual match singles win dating back to last season.

The Cavaliers will have two weeks off before returning to action on March 15 as they visit Maryland.
