CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. The Virginia baseball team won its 10th-consecutive game Sunday, downing Cornell 12-3 at Davenport Field. With the win, the 10-0 Cavaliers are off to their best start to a season in school history.
Dan Grovatt (Fr., Tabernacle, N.J.) paced Virginia’s offensive attack, going 4-for-5 with three doubles, three runs scored and two runs batted in. For the week, Grovatt went 11-for-15 (.733) with five doubles and eight RBI.
Greg Miclat (Jr., Concord, N.C.), Tyler Canon (Pigeon Forge, Tenn.) and Jeremy Farrell (Jr., Westlake, Ohio) each had two hits for UVa. Farrell ran his team-best hitting streak to nine games, while Cannon pushed his to eight.
Virginia starting pitcher Jeff Lorick (So., Duluth, Ga.) threw five innings, allowing three earned runs, six hits and two walks while striking out three to earn his first win of the season. Cornell starter David Rochefort (0-1) lasted two innings and gave up 10 runs (five earned), six hits and two walks while striking out two.
Virginia took advantage of three Cornell errors in the first inning to score four runs, and then tacked on six runs in the second inning to grab a 10-0 lead after just two innings. Grovatt had RBI doubles in each inning as the Cavaliers batted around in each frame.
Cornell (1-2) posted three runs in the fifth inning, highlighted by a two-run double by Dominic DiRicco.
The Cavaliers scored a run in the sixth on a two-out triple by Miclat to plate Grovatt. In the eighth, Virginia added its final run on a Corey Hunt (So., Charlottesville, Va.) single to score Grovatt.
Virginia’s bullpen was solid, as freshmen Tyler Wilson (Midlothian, Va.), Sean Tierney (Moseley, Va.) and Jake Cowan (Roswell, Ga.) combined for four shutout innings. They allowed just one hit and one walk while striking out seven.
Virginia kicks off its first road trip Tuesday, traveling to VMI for a 4 p.m. game. The Cavaliers open ACC play next weekend at NC State.
