CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. The Virginia baseball team begins a 12-game homestand Tuesday as it welcomes Stony Brook for a two-game series. The teams will play at 4 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at Davenport Field in the first-ever meetings between the two programs.
Parking for the games will be available in the University Hall lot both days.
The Cavaliers, ranked as high as No. 19 nationally in the USA Today/ESPN coaches’ poll this week, went 3-2 last week with midweek wins against Radford (8-2) and Navy (11-5) and a 1-2 mark over the weekend at Duke. Jeremy Farrell (Jr., Westlake, Ohio) led the team with a .500 batting average (9-for-18) for the week. Jarrett Parker (Fr., Stafford, Va.) also had a hot week, batting .467 with two doubles, a triple and six runs scored.
Pat McAnaney (Sr., Syracuse, N.Y.) was honored for his pitching on Saturday with Co-ACC Pitcher of the Week laurels. He threw a complete game in the 10-1 win over Duke and allowed just an unearned run, four hits and a walk while striking out eight. He now leads the ACC in innings pitched (28.0) and strikeouts (32) this season.
Virginia enters the week as the league leader in team earned run average (2.24) and is second in team batting (.336).
Dan Grovatt (Fr., Tabernacle, N.J.) continues to top the team in hitting with a .449 batting average, while Farrell is batting .429. The two are fourth and fifth, respectively, in batting in the ACC. David Adams (Jr., Margate, Fla.) is batting .384 and leads the team with 21 RBI tied for third in the league. Grovatt and Farrell each have 18 RBI.
Stony Brook, a member of the America East Conference, comes to the Charlottesville with a 4-5 record after dropping three games at Charlotte over the weekend to start its nine-game spring break trip. Steven Mazzurco leads the team with a .318 batting average, while Chad Marshall follows closely at .310. Nick Thode leads the team with seven RBI.
Virginia opens its home ACC schedule this weekend, as Boston College comes to town for a three-game series.
