CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. Virginia wrestlers Chris Henrich (Lansdale, Pa.) and Michael Chaires (Scotia, N.Y.) have been honored by Amateur Wrestling News on the publication’s 2008 All-Rookie Teams. Henrich was named to the first team at 174 pounds, while Chaires was a sixth-team pick at 165 pounds.
Henrich finished the season 26-10 overall and 4-1 in ACC dual-meet competition. He steadily improved as the season progressed and caught fire after the new year, going 17-4 while moving into the national rankings for the final eight weeks of the season. He finished the year ranked No. 17 by W.I.N. and No. 19 in the InterMat rankings.
Henrich took second place at the ACC Championships and earned an at-large bid from the conference into the NCAA Championships. His 10 losses this season all came by five points or fewer.
Chaires went 32-9 this season and had a 3-2 mark in ACC duals. He took third place at the ACC Championships this season and was fourth on the team with six falls. Chaires also was strong after the start of the new year, going 17-6 in the last half of the season.
