CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. Virginia baseball’s David Adams (Jr., Margate, Fla.), Greg Miclat (Jr., Concord, N.C.) and Jacob Thompson (Jr., Danville, Va.) each were selected in the 2008 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Thursday. Adams was a third-round pick of the New York Yankees, Miclat was a fifth-round pick by Baltimore and Thompson was selected in the fifth round by Atlanta.
Adams, the 106th overall pick, has a career batting average of .325. He ranks seventh at Virginia is career runs batted in (143) and runs (150), eighth in walks (102) and 10th in at bats (696). In his three seasons, Adams played in 183 games while starting 182. He has missed just two games in his career. This year he hit a career-high six home runs while knocking in 51 runs, also a career best.
Miclat, the 146th pick, has hit .334 during his three seasons at Virginia. The Cavaliers’ leadoff hitter over the last three years has 83 career stolen bases, which is tied for first in Virginia history and 19th in ACC history. He also ranks seventh in career runs (156), and 13th in hits (209). Miclat owns the two highest single-season stolen base totals with 32 in 2007 and 30 in 2008.
Thompson, the 160th pick, finished his junior season as the winningest pitcher in program history with 27 victories (27-8 record). He ranks third on the UVa career list in innings pitched (296.0) and games started (47), fourth in strikeouts (248), fifth in winning percentage (.771) and 10th in earned run average (2.65).
Virginia has now had 72 players selected in the MLB Draft, including 19 over the last five years. It marks the program’s most draft picks ever over a five-year period.
The first six rounds of the draft are now complete. It continues at 11:30 a.m. Friday.
