CHARLOTTESVILLE Kelsie Chaudoin, a recent UVa graduate and former All-American rower, and Helen Tompkins, a rising junior in the Cavalier rowing program, have been named to the Under 23 World Championships roster, USRowing announced Monday. Chaudoin will be part of the women’s eight crew and Tompkins will row in the women’s single sculls representing the United States at the 2008 FISA World Rowing Under 23 Championships scheduled for July 17-20 in Brandenburg, Germany.

Virginia head women’s rowing coach Kevin Sauer will coach the women’s eight for the United States. He was the 2008 ACC Coach of the Year after leading the Cavaliers to their UVa-record ninth-consecutive conference championship. Virginia finished fifth at the NCAA Championships after winning the overall team title and regional crown at the 2008 South/Central Regional Championships.

Chaudoin (Germantown, Tenn.), a first team All-American selection by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) and team captain, is joined on the women’s eight crew by rowers from Washington, Clemson, Northeastern, Yale, Notre Dame, Harvard, Wisconsin and Stanford. In addition to her national honors, Chaudoin was an All-South Region Team member by the CRCA and an All-ACC selection.

A member of UVa’s Varsity Eight in 2007-08, Chaudoin helped the boat to regular-season victories over Bucknell, Stanford, UCLA, Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State, Wisconsin and Oregon State. The Varsity Eight was named ACC Crew of the Year and won the ACC Championship. It followed up that performance with a sweep of its races at the South/Central Regional Championships.

Tompkins (Friendswood, Texas) was a member of Virginia’s Second Varsity Eight that finished fourth at the NCAA Championships and second at the South/Central Regional Championships. The crew won its ACC Championship race.

USRowing is a nonprofit organization recognized by the United States Olympic Committee as the governing body for the sport of rowing in the United States.
