CHARLOTTESVILLE The Virginia men’s tennis team has announced the addition of Derek Schwandt to the coaching staff. Schwandt, a former standout at Richmond, will serve as a volunteer assistant coach.
“I am honored to be a part of the UVa tennis family, and I am eager to contribute to its continued success,” said Schwandt. “The opportunity to work with Coach Boland, Coach Bresky, and such high-level student-athletes is inspiring.”
Schwandt is a 2005 graduate of Richmond, earning a degree in economics. During his collegiate career, he helped the Spiders to three Atlantic 10 Championships and three NCAA Tournament appearances. In his junior and senior seasons Schwandt earned All-Atlantic 10 honors.
Since graduating from Richmond, Schwandt has played professionally on the ITF Futures Tour. He played in tournaments all over the world and qualified for the main draw at 11 tournaments.
Over the past seven years, Schwandt has coached nationally-ranked and regionally-ranked junior tennis players.
