CHARLOTTESVILLE Sophomore Kika Toulouse (Arlington, Va.) scored her first career goal in the 72nd minute to lift No. 9 Virginia to a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over No. 14 Boston College at Klckner Stadium. The victory was the Cavaliers’ first-ever victory over the Eagles and improves their record to 12-2-1 overall and 6-1-0 in the ACC.

“This capped a week where we get two very good results,” said head coach Steve Swanson. “We had a battle at Maryland on Thursday and then had to come back from down a goal today. It gives us a lot of momentum heading into next week.”

Boston College (9-4-2, 3-3-1 ACC) opened the game by taking a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute. Gina DiMartino slipped a ball through to Julia Bouchelle, who scored her fifth goal of the season. The Cavaliers answered in the 27th minute with the equalizer. Sarah Senty (Arlington, Va.) sent a ball to the flank to Lauren Alwine (Elizabethtown, Pa.). Alwine threaded a ball to Jess Rostedt (Kent, Ohio), who took a touch before blasting a shot just inside the far post for her second goal of the season. The assist for Alwine was her ACC leading 12th of the season.

“We spotted them a goal early but did a good job of getting it back in the first half,” said Swanson. “At halftime, we were able to regroup and did a good job of executing in the second half.”

Virginia had the majority of chances in the second half and finally broke the tie in the 72nd minute. Senty intercepted a clearance of a corner kick and played it out wide to Amanda Stewart (West Chester, Pa.). Stewart sent a cross to the far post where Toulouse headed in the game-winner.

“Kika has improved her game a lot over the past year and a half,” said Swanson. “She had been creating a lot of chances for herself this season and it was only a matter of time before she got one to go in. I am glad she picked today to get her first goal.”

The Cavaliers outshot the Eagles 11-8 in the contest and had a 5-3 corner kick advantage. Celeste Miles (Garland, Texas) made a career-high four saves for Virginia, while Jillian Mastroianni had four saves for the Eagles.

The victory was the Cavaliers’ first ever win over the Eagles, who had won 1-0 over Virginia in each of the past three seasons. The win was also Virginia’s first come-from-behind victory since a 2-1 victory over Clemson in the semifinals of the 2004 ACC Tournament.

The Cavaliers will look to snap another winless streak on Friday as they host No. 5 North Carolina. The Tar Heels lead the all-time series 32-0-2, but last year needed overtime to down the Cavaliers 1-0 in Chapel Hill and penalty kicks to move past the Cavaliers in the semifinals of the ACC Tournament. Game time Friday is 7 p.m. and the game will be broadcast online by ACC Select.
