No. 19 UVa Falls At Georgia Tech, 74-66

ATLANTA The 19th-ranked Virginia women’s basketball team fell on the road at Georgia Tech in its regular-season finale, 74-66. Lyndra Littles and Monica Wright led the Cavaliers with 21 and 18 points, respectively.

The Cavaliers finish the regular season and will head to the 2009 ACC Tournament (March 5-8 in Greensboro, N.C.) as the No. 6 seed. Virginia will face No. 11 seed Virginia Tech on Thursday at 8 p.m. in the opening round. The winner advances to play No. 3 seed Duke Friday at 8 p.m.

Virginia (22-8, 8-6 ACC) fell into a first-half hole, as Georgia Tech (21-8, 8-6 ACC) opened up an eight-point lead, 22-14, on a lay-up by Jacqua Williams with 9:12 remaining. The Cavaliers, led by Littles with 12 first-half points and Wright with nine, came back on the Yellow Jackets and pulled to within three, 35-32, at halftime.

With 16 first-half turnovers which translated into 11 Georgia Tech points, Virginia trailed at halftime for the 15th time this season.

In the second half, Georgia Tech added to its lead and the Cavaliers got no closer than six points in the closing minutes of the game. A 3-pointer by Jacqua Williams with 3:25 left gave the Yellow Jackets a 67-56 lead and essentially sealed the victory for Georgia Tech.

Ariana Moorer added 11 points and six rebounds for Virginia, while Aisha Mohammed scored eight points and grabbed eight rebounds.

Five Georgia Tech players scored in double-figures, led by Iasia Hemingway with 17 points and Alex Montgomery with 16 points and nine rebounds.

Virginia heads to the ACC Tournament with an opening round game on Thursday, March 5 at the Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, N.C. The Cavaliers’ game vs. Virginia tech at 8 p.m. will be streamed live by ACC Select free of charge.
