Women’s Tennis Downs Boston College 6-1

CHARLOTTESVILLE The No. 29 Virginia women’s tennis team recorded its fourth consecutive win, defeating Boston College 6-1 Sunday at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. The Cavaliers improve to 8-2 overall and 2-0 in the ACC with the victory.

The match began with singles play and the Cavaliers took five of the six matches. Emily Fraser (Rye, N.Y.) recorded Virginia’s first point with her 6-0, 6-0 win over No. 118 Lana Krasnopolsky at the No. 1 position. Jennifer Stevens (Miami, Fla.) made the score 2-0 with her 6-4, 6-2 win over Katarina Gajic at No. 2. Amanda Rales (Bethesda, Md.) topped Katharine Attwell 6-5, 6-1 at No. 4 singles to make the score 3-0 before Neela Vaez (Perrysburg, Ohio) clinched the win with her 6-0, 7-5 win over Dasha Cherkasov at No. 6 singles. Claire Bartlett (Chattanooga, Tenn.) added a 6-4, 6-0 win over Brittany Delaney at No. 5 singles before Boston College scored their only point of the day at No. 2, where No. 96 Lauren Cash defeated Lindsey Hardenbergh (Fairfax Station, Va.) 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.

In doubles play, the Cavaliers swept all three matches for the final point of the match. Rales and Vaez won at No. 1, Bartlett and Maggie Yahner (Las Vegas, Nev.) won at No. 2 and Fraser and Karoline Steiro (Oslo, Norway) won at No. 3.

“We are really pleased and impressed with the team’s performance today,” said Virginia head coach Mark Guilbeau. “We are grateful for all the hard work they are doing both on and off the court to ensure that this process continues to be positive. Today was a great day of tennis as we got a strong win over a solid Boston College team.”

Virginia will visit No. 31 William & Mary on Tuesday. Match time in Williamsburg is 3 p.m.
