Cavalier Trio Earns Academic Accolades

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia field hockey players Lauren Elstein, Rachel Jennings and Floor Vogels were named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association’s Division I National Academic Squad, the organization announced Monday. Elstein, Jennings and Vogels were also three members selected to the 2008 All-ACC Academic Field Hockey Team that was also recently announced.

The NFHCA National Academic Squad recognizes those student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or higher through the first semester of the 2008-09 academic year. Similarly, members of the All-ACC Academic Team must have earned a 3.00 GPA for the previous semester and maintained a 3.0 cumulative average during her academic career.

Elstein, a Fredericksburg, Va., native, played in 14 of the team’s games, missing nine because of injury. She finished the year with four goals and seven assists.

Jennings, who hails from Macungie, Pa., played in all 23 games and was a key member of the Cavalier defense, along with Vogels, a fellow rookie.

Vogels played in 22 games and concluded the season with eight goals, including three game-winners, and four assists. The Nijmegen, Netherlands native was a second-team all-region selection.

Virginia concluded the 2008 campaign with 14-9 record and made its third straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
