CHARLOTTESVILLEThe Virginia men’s basketball team plays its third game in six days Tuesday night (March 3) when the Cavaliers play an Atlantic Coast Conference game at Clemson.
The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. and will be televised on the Regional Sports Networks. That is normally Comcast SportsNet in the Mid-Atlantic Region, but because of a Washington Capitals hockey game, the Virginia-Clemson game will be on Comcast SportsNet Plus (CSN Plus). CSN Plus is available on Comcast cable systems throughout Virginia (http://comcastsportsnet.tv/pages/plus) and is channel 22 on Comcast Digital Cable in Charlottesville.
Virginia enters the game with an overall record of 9-16 and a 3-11 record in the ACC. The Cavaliers have lost their last three games, including a 70-60 loss to Wake Forest on Saturday (Feb. 28) at John Paul Jones Arena.
Junior guard Calvin Baker scored 13 points against Wake Forest to lead UVa and senior guard/forward Mamadi Diane scored 12. Freshman guard Sylven Landesberg added 10 points, five rebounds and three assists. Baker has been in double figures in scoring the last four games.
Landesberg leads Virginia in scoring with an average of 17.4 points a game. He is also averaging 6.0 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 34.1 minutes played a game, and is shooting 82.8 percent (135-163) from the free throw line. Landesberg ranks fourth in the ACC in minutes played, eighth in scoring, 10th in free throw percentage and 20th in rebounding.
The only other player averaging in double figures in scoring for the Cavaliers is junior forward Mike Scott. Scott is averaging 10.4 points and 7.1 rebounds a game, and is shooting 54.8 percent (102-186) from the field. He ranks third in the ACC in offensive rebounding and 10th in overall rebounding.
Freshman guard Sammy Zeglinski leads UVa in three-point field goals (33), assists (83) and steals (36). He is averaging 8.5 points a game and ranks ninth in the ACC with an average of 3.3 assists a game.
Baker is averaging 8.2 points and 2.5 assists a game, and junior forward Jamil Tucker is averaging 7.4 points and 3.8 rebounds a game.
Sophomore guard Jeff Jones has started the last seven games and is averaging 11.3 points, 2.8 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 28.8 minutes played in the last eight games.
Tuesday’s game is the second of the season between Virginia and Clemson. The Cavaliers defeated the Tigers 85-81 in overtime at John Paul Jones Arena on Feb. 15. Landesberg scored 23 points to lead UVa in that victory over Clemson, and the Cavaliers got 18 points and 10 rebounds from Scott. Zeglinski added 15 points, Jones scored 12 points and Tucker provided 11 points for Virginia. The double-double was Scott’s seventh of the season.
Sophomore guard Terrence Oglesby scored 17 points to lead four Clemson players in double figures in scoring in the game earlier this season. Junior forward/center Trevor Booker scored 16 points and had seven rebounds, senior guard/forward K.C. Rivers scored 15 points and sophomore guard Demontez Stitt added 12 points. Senior forward/center Raymond Sykes had a game-high 11 rebounds for the Tigers.
Booker leads Clemson in scoring and rebounding. He is averaging 15.2 points and 9.5 rebounds a game. Booker ranks first in the ACC in field goal percentage (56.5 percent, 161-285), second in rebounding and 13th in scoring.
Rivers is averaging 14.5 points and 6.2 rebounds a game, and Oglesby is averaging 13.6 points a game.
Virginia leads the overall series with Clemson 66-48. The Tigers lead 31-21 in games played at Clemson. Clemson leads 21-17 in games played at Littlejohn Coliseum.
After Tuesday’s game at Clemson, the Cavaliers close out their 2008-09 regular season schedule with a game against Maryland at John Paul Jones Arena on Saturday (March 7). That game is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. and will be televised by ABC.
