Quotes From Debbie Ryan’s Pre-ACC Tournament Teleconference

Opening Statement:
We are preparing for Virginia Tech in the first round of the ACC Tournament and we are very excited for that. We didn’t finish the season the way that we wanted to, but we had some very good play leading up to our game vs. Georgia Tech. So we’re going to get ourselves back on track and put our best foot forward. We are very excited about our players being honored yesterday. Lyndra Littles, Monica Wright and Aisha Mohammed are all deserving of All-ACC honors and I was very proud of them.

On what her top moment from the last nine years in the Greensboro Coliseum is:
That’s a tough one. I don’t know that I have one top moment in the Coliseum. I don’t think in terms of moments. I’ll just say, I think that it’s just an incredible experience for players and coaches alike. I think the people in Greensboro do just a fabulous job of creating an atmosphere that is exciting and very much geared toward us. It’s the most amazing thing that we have created for women’s basketball the crowds, the atmosphere, the way that they take care of each and every team and they make everyone feel special to me that is better than a moment. The games are obviously something that everybody loves and winning games is always a great thing. We’ve won our share of games there, but it’s really all about the entire experience of the tournament to me.

On playing in-state rival Virginia Tech:
I think that whenever you’re playing one of your in-state rivals it’s going to give a great deal of motivation. I think our team right now is focused on really righting the ship and getting ourselves back to where we were just five days before we played Georgia Tech. As far as playing Virginia Tech, we’re obviously always going to be ready to play Virginia Tech, that’s something that comes naturally with the rivalry.

On Monica Wright and Lyndra Littles being named to the All-ACC first team:
It’s been obviously a luxury for me to have players like them and I’m very blessed to have them. Both of those players have worked extremely hard to where they are right now and I’m just glad to see them being recognized. I just think it’s a tremendous effort for both of them and honestly it’s an honor to be able to coach them.

On possibly getting her 700th victory in this postseason:
I haven’t really paid attention to any of that. As you get older in this profession, you realize more and more that you have very little to do with the wins in particular. You probably have more to do with the losses than with the wins. 700 wins is a group thing and for me to be recognized for it. … there’s so many people that go into a program winning, not the least of which the players who actually play the game and shoot the shots.
