Two Virginia Players Named To All-ACC Academic Team

GREENSBORO, N.C. Virginia junior forward/center Jerome Meyinsse (Baton Rouge, La.) and senior center Tunji Soroye (Dugbe Ibadan, Nigeria) were named to the 2009 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Men’s Basketball Team on Friday.

It’s the second consecutive year Meyinsse has been named to the team and the first time for Soroye. Meyinsse and Soroye are among eight players named to the team.

Meyinsse, a double major in economics and math, has played in 17 games for Virginia this season and has started once. He is averaging 1.7 points and 1.6 rebounds a game. He had season-high totals of 10 points and eight rebounds at Syracuse on Nov. 28.

Soroye is in his fifth season in the Virginia program. He had his medical hardship waiver request approved after playing in just two games last season because of injuries. Soroye earned his bachelor’s degree in anthropology from Virginia in May of 2008. He is currently enrolled in graduate course work in Virginia’s Curry School of Education.

Soroye has played in 16 games this season and started three. He is averaging 2.1 points and 2.4 rebounds a game. He is currently ninth on Virginia’s career blocked shots list with 94.

Joining Meyinsse and Soroye on the team are Jack McClinton (Miami), Greg Paulus (Duke), Tanner Smith (Clemson), Johnny Thomas (NC State), Tyler Zeller (North Carolina) and Brian Zoubek (Duke).
