CHARLOTTESVILLE The No. 1 Virginia men’s tennis team remained undefeated (17-0) by sweeping a doubleheader on Tuesday. The Cavaliers opened the day with a 6-1 win over Old Dominion at the Snyder Tennis Center, followed by a 7-0 win over Howard in the nightcap at the Boyd Tinsley Courts.

“We are playing better each match this season,” said Virginia head coach Brian Boland. “The guys are focused and have a lot of energy every time they take the courts. The weather has been spectacular here and has allowed us to get some great training in, which has allowed us to improve even more.”

Virginia won the opening match of the day over Old Dominion 6-1. The Cavaliers won the doubles point as Dominic Inglot (London, England) and Michael Shabaz (Fairfax, Va.) won at No. 2 and Drew Courtney (Clifton, Va.) and Lee Singer (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) won at No. 3. In singles, the Cavaliers got straight set wins by Inglot at No. 2, Shabaz at No. 3, Houston Barrick (Brentwood, Tenn.) at No. 4, Steven Eelkman Rooda (Amersfoort, The Netherlands) at No. 5 and Courtney at No. 6.

Against Howard, Virginia won all three doubles matches. Courtney and Singer won at No. 1, Eelkman Rooda teamed with Leif Sunderland (Malibu, Calif.) for the win at No. 2, and David Nguyen (Columbia, Md.) and Reese Milner (Los Angeles, Calif.) won at No. 3. Singles play was highlighted by Sunderland’s 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles in his dual match debut. Inglot, Singh, Singer, Nguyen and Milner also had straight set wins for the Cavaliers.

“Leif has put in so much effort and time into this program,” said Boland. “He represents our program so well. To see him have the chance to compete tonight and win convincingly was great. He deserves this success.”

The Cavaliers will travel to the Lone Star State this weekend to play at Baylor on Friday and Texas on Sunday.
