CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. Virginia wrestler Matt Bonson (R-Fr., Lewistown, Pa.) today was named as an at-large selection in the 133-pound class for the 2009 NCAA Championships. Bonson becomes the seventh Virginia selection to the championships this year.
“I am so happy for Matt he earned it,” Virginia head coach Steve Garland said. “He had two wins this season against top 12 ranked opponents. He had a very successful season and was rewarded for that. I can’t wait to see him compete at NCAAs.”
Bonson went 17-7 this season, with nearly half of his wins coming by fall (eight). He also had two technical falls and two major decisions.
Two of his wins stood out from the rest. On Nov. 29, he won by a 14-6 major decision over then-No. 11 Tyler Shinn of Oklahoma State. On Jan. 10, he earned a 10-7 decision over then-No. 11 Dan Mitcheff of Kent State.
Bonson joins Nick Nelson (141), Kellon Balum (149), Jedd Moore (157), Chris Henrich (174), Rocco Caponi (184) and Brent Jones (197) in the Virginia contingent at the NCAA Championships.
The NCAA Championships begin March 19 in St. Louis and run through March 21.
