DMR Earns All-America Honors at NCAA Indoor Championships

COLLEGE STATION, Texas Virginia’s distance medley relay team of freshman Sintayehu Taye, sophomore Meikle Paschal, freshman Lance Roller and senior Andrew Jesien earned All-America honors on Friday evening at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in College Station, Texas.

Taye, Paschal, Roller and Jesien combined to complete the race in sixth place with a time of 9:36.89 to each earn their first All-America honor. The quartet is the third DMR relay team at Virginia to earn All-America honors, as they join the 1981 and 2005 squads tagged with the national honor.

Oregon won the relay in 9:29.59. Arkansas finished runner-up in 9:30.31, with California rounding out the top-three in 9:30.39.

Also competing for the Cavaliers, senior All-American Yemi Ayeni completed his first-ever indoor championship, finishing 12th in the shot put with a throw of 57’ 11.25”. Arizona State’s Ryan Whiting won the event with a toss of 66’ 1.75”.

The Cavaliers will open their 2009 Outdoor Track and Field season next weekend, hosting the UVa Spring Swashbuckle on Friday and Saturday at Lannigan Track.
