LOS ANGELES Virginia junior guard Monica Wright has been named to the official John R. Wooden Award National ballot that decides the women’s 2009 Wooden Award All-American Team and Player of the Year, presented annually to the nation’s top collegiate female basketball player.
Wright, named a first team All-ACC selection at the conclusion of the regular season, leads the league and UVa in scoring (20.5 points per game) and is also a candidate for the Naismith Trophy and Wade Trophy.
She has had two 30+ point performances this season, including the ACC’s highest point total, 35 points, at Tennessee on Nov. 17. She has already set a new Virginia single-season scoring record, totaling 657 points this season.
Nineteen student-athletes have been named to the national ballot (nine seniors, seven juniors, three sophomores).
A panel of more than 300 voters, comprised of sports media members and college basketball experts from around the nationa, have until 3 p.m. on Monday, March 30, to cast their votes, a long voting period that allows voters to evaluate players up through games of the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament. All players on the ballot have proven to their universities that they are making progress toward graduatoing and are maintaining a cumulative 2.0 GPA.
