Baton Rouge, LA The No. 4 Virginia women’s golf team got out of the gate quickly in its first spring tournament, finishing the first day of play at the LSU Golf Classic in second place. The Cavaliers shot 3-under 285 to complete the first 18 holes just one shot behind No. 7 Wake Forest. LSU is tied with North Carolina for third place at 287. Virginia’s team score was just one shot short of equaling the school low single-round record.
Virginia sophomore Calle Nielson tied the Virginia single-round individual record with a 5-under 67 to lead the field after the opening round. Nielson had five birdies during her bogey-free round. Her previous best single-round score was a 4-under 68 she shot in her last competition at the NGCA Match Play Championships in UVa’s final event of the fall.
Nielson’s score equaled the 67 recorded by Leah Wigger at the 2005 NCAA East Regional at Florida. Wigger takes a one-shot lead into Saturday’s second round. LSU’s Jaqueline Hedwall and North Carolina’s Allie White trail her by one stroke.
Joining Nielson near the top of the leaderboard is UVa’s Jennie Arseneault, who shot 1-under 71 to be in a four-way tie for 10th place. Lene Krog posted a 1-over 73 to finish 30th, Whitney Neuhauser shot 74 and is in 39th place while Joy Kim finished 70th with a 77. Kristen Simpson, playing as a non-scoring individual, also shot 77.
Due to weather in the area, a shotgun start was used for Friday’s first round. The second round is slated to begin at 8:30 a.m. Saturday and the final round takes place Sunday. Live scoring is online at Golfstat.com.
