ATLANTA Virginia’s Monica Wright and Lyndra Littles were named as two of the 40 regional finalists for the 2009 State Farm Coaches’ All-America Basketball Team, the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), in cooperation with State Farm, announced Tuesday.
The 40 finalists are all in the running for selection to the 10-member State Farm Coaches’ All-America Team.
Wright (Woodbridge, Va.) leads the conference and ranks 13th in the nation in scoring at 20.5 points per game and is a finalist for the Wooden Award, the Wade Trophy and Naismith Trophy. The 5-11 junior ranks among the ACC’s top-20 leaders in rebounding, assists and free throw percentage and earned first team all-conference honors.
Littles missed nine games during the fall semester, but her 20.5 points per game scoring average would have led the conference had she played in the required 75 percent of her team’s games. She returned in time to make her presence felt in conference play, averaging 22.7 points in 14 ACC games. The 6-1 senior also contributed 6.4 rebounds per game en route to first team All-ACC honors.
No. 22-ranked Virginia opens play as a No. 5 seed at the 2009 NCAA Tournament, facing 12th-seeded Marist in Los Angeles on Saturday, March 21. Tip-off from the Galen Center is approximately 7:30 p.m. (Pacific Time)
