COLLEGE STATION, Texas Virginia’s Mei Christensen earned All-America honors with a fifth-place finish in the 100 back Friday at the 2009 NCAA Championships. The event, which is being held at the Student Rec Center Natatorium on Texas A&M’s campus, runs through Saturday. After day two, Virginia stands in 14th place with 89 points.
Christensen collected All-America honors, the second individual All-America award of her career, touching at 51.99.
Sophomore Claire Crippen picked up honorable mention All-America accolades after her 14th-place performance in the 400 individual medley. She finished in 4:08.08 to break her own ACC and school record of 4:08.78 set at the conference championships last month.
The 200 medley relay team of Christensen, Katherine McDonnell, Lauren Smart and Kristen Wallace earned honorable mention All-America nods with a nine-place finish. The Cavaliers won the consolation final in 1:37.94.
The 800 relay team of Jen Narum, Megan Evo, Jenna Harris and Wallace finished in 7:06.47 for ninth place. Wallace held off Florida’s Stephanie Proud in the last leg to win the second heat of the timed final. The quartet earned honorable mention All-America honors.
Day three of the NCAA Championships continues Friday with 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, 400 freestyle relay and 1650 freestyle. Preliminaries are set to begin at 11 a.m. central time.
