CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia track and field teams completed its season opening outdoor meet, the UVa Spring Swashbuckle, on Saturday at Lannigan Field. Led by senior Caitlin Kelly and sophomore Emil Heineking, who each won their respective events with an NCAA Regional qualifying performance, and junior Ayla Smith’s dual victories, 15 other Cavaliers were victories in their respective events, while two others met the NCAA Regional mark.
Kelly and senior Billie-Jo Grant finished first and second, respectively, in the discus, with both Cavaliers hitting NCAA qualifying marks. Kelly won the event with a throw of 163’ 08”, while Grant finished runner-up with a mark of 161’ 03”.
In the 1500m, Heineking and senior Kevin Tschirhart both turned in NCAA Regional times, with Heineking winning the event in 3:46.62 and Tschirhart crossing second in 3:47.38.
Smith, running in the 100m hurdles and 200m dash, proved victorious in both events, as she won the hurdles in 14.09 and the 200m in 25.05.
In the 100m dash, sophomore Adams Abdulrazaaq finished first in 10.96, while sophomore Lyndsay Harper won the 400m in 58.31.
Senior Sara Casscells won the 800m in 2:15.26, while junior Stephanie Garcia won the women’s 1500m, finishing in 4:34.93.
In the 3000m, freshman Anna Corrigan and sophomore Andrew Mearns claimed first-place victories. Corrigan completed the race in 10:13.78, while Mearns turned in a time of 8:31.77.
In the throws, freshman Vincenzo Chiariello and Alexa Manning claimed first places in the hammer throw, while sophomore Andrew Fahringer won the discus competition and sophomore Indira Morton and senior Stephen Thompson claimed victories in the javelin. Junior Eric Pickle and freshman Sophia Coleburn each won the shot put.
Chiariello tossed 171’ 1” in the hammer, while Manning hit a mark of 157’ 06”. Fahringer threw 161’ 05” in the discus and in the javelin, Morton threw 133’ 1”, while Thompson’s mark of 143’ 02” was good for first. Pickle threw 49’ 6.5” in the shot put, while Coleburn heaved 43’ 8”.
In the jumps, junior Katie Darraugh won the pole vault, clearing 11’ 11.75”, and sophomore Katie Trizna cleared 5’ 3” for top honors in the high jump. In the long jump.
Virginia will return to action next weekend, as some Cavaliers will head to Palo Alto, Calif., to compete in the Stanford Invite. Others will head to Raleigh, N.C., to take part in the Raleigh Relays. Both events are Friday, March 27 and Saturday, March 28.
